Meet Chris: Senior UI Engineer - Making Portfolium Pixel Perfect

  BLOG

Welcome back to our latest blog series dedicated to getting to know the people at Portfolium (or Planet Portfolium)! Our third interview will be with our Senior UI Engineer, Chris Guerrero. Strap on your space boots while you find out how Chris made the move from a polysci major to UI ninja / resident barista at Portfolium.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is Chris' life like?
By nature, I’m a design thinker, an early adopter, and a minimalist. I’m a geek fortunate to be living in an era where geeks have become the stars of HBO series. As a native San Diegan, I’m proud to be involved in the growing tech industry here in America’s finest city. When I’m not building the latest and greatest at Portfolium, you’ll find me out with friends - likely enjoying a meal at any of the countless gastropubs around town. Or, I might choose to stay in and browse the “Science & Nature Docs” section on Netflix.

What do you do at Portfolium?
As a Senior UI Engineer, I serve a hybrid role on the dev team at Portfolium. For any given project, I may spend time thinking through and planning the user experience, designing wireframes and mockups, or architecting and building the finished product. I also help develop the Portfolium brand, and work with contractors who produce visual assets. Having the opportunity to shape our products in so many ways makes my work extremely exciting and fulfilling. Lately, I’ve been interested in the development of a universal design system for designers, engineers, marketers, and anyone else working with a Portfolium product to use.

Tell us what the culture's like on the dev team.
Our dev team is a fascinating blend of personalities and talent. Each sprint is a team effort with a few all-star standouts. We do whatever it takes to make sure our most important tasks get shipped, and we aren’t afraid to hit that deploy button. We also know how to have fun, and we aren’t afraid to laugh at ourselves -- or at John.

What’s your favorite thing about Portfolium as a company?
It’s an amazing feeling to know that everyone at Portfolium is passionate about connecting learners with the opportunity they deserve. As a political science major turned programmer, I was fortunate to start my career with a company that understood the value of potential over pedigree. At Portfolium, we’re doing everything in our power to make sure every student can do the same.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?
When I was a Junior Web Developer, a mentor taught me the value of self-reflection. Often when presented with an engineering challenge, as in life, it’s best to slow down and consider all options before rushing to conclusions.

Show us your best entry in your Portfolium! Why is it your best?
I don’t often get to practice vector illustration, but when the Portfolium team brewed its own beer, we needed a space-themed label to go with the name “Astronaut Amber”. This was a fun opportunity to produce a tangible design that everyone would be proud to see in their fridge.
