Create An Awesome Digital Portfolio With These 10 Pro Tips

Today, more and more companies are using innovative and active recruiting techniques. This means that rather than posting a job and waiting for applicants to find them, thousands of employers are searching the internet for top talent...every day!

But while recruiters are adopting new strategies, job seekers aren’t quite keeping up with the changes. Many still seem to think that the only way to communicate skills and experiences is through vague text on a resume or cover letter. What people are missing out on is the opportunity to showcase their work visually!

Luckily, individuals of all backgrounds can now create a stunning digital portfolio that will make their projects, papers, and presentations more visible to recruiters, while also improving their online identity (remember: employers will google you).

Now, with just a few clicks, you can showcase your work and accomplishments on your personal e-portfolio, and share it in a matter of seconds...whether it’s through social media, an email, or even during your interview!

Begin crafting your lifelong ePortfolio today.

These days, EVERYONE is connected to a device and has the ability to see you work at any given time. So be proud of what you’ve accomplished and put yourself out there - you never know who you’ll impress!

So, how do you put all of your work together to really wow a recruiter? Here are some key points to guide you:

#1 Present a well-rounded version of yourself. Who are you? What makes you, you? Think of that all-too familiar interview question, “Tell me about yourself…” Which of your experiences are you most proud of? People often think it's only appropriate to share academic or professional-related things, but employers want to see your personality, too! Here are a few things to consider:

  • Volunteer Work
  • Sports/Athletics
  • Hobbies

#2 Always add media. Digital portfolios are unique because they give you the space to upload all kinds of files--PDFs, YouTube videos, pictures, presentations, screenshots, all types of Microsoft documents...and the list goes on!

Keep the following Portfolium hacks in mind:

  • Is your artifact a physical object? Don’t worry! Snap a few photos of it and upload the images. Same thing goes for experiences and events!
  • If you really want to make your designs pop, search online for mockup resources such as mockdrop.io or mockupeverything.com, They have free device mockups to drop your screenshots into so they look like you hired a photographer!

#3 Update your digital portfolio regularly. Portfolium has made this extremely easy to do, as it’s fully mobile optimized for any device. You can also download the iOS app to capture your next lab experiment, research project, or charity event in the moment!

Portfolium hack: don’t worry about having to create the perfect entry right on the spot or when you are completely finished with your projects. Set your entry to draft mode (by editing its privacy settings to “only me”) and showcase your process while you are working on the project. Posting the sketches and in between steps along with the final is good practice. Don’t forget to finalize it and change the privacy settings back to visible later on!

#4 Tag your teammates. One of the top qualities employers look for is the ability to work well on a team. By tagging your teammates, you’re giving credit where it’s due. This simple act can go a long way in impressing employers. You can also ask your friends to return the favor - on Portfolium, people can also view the entries you were tagged in.

#5 Don’t spill the beans. Some of you might have signed some pretty important contracts prohibiting you from sharing your work with anyone. If you’re stressing over the secretivity of your work, fear not! You can creatively showcase your confidential work without getting yourself into any trouble.

Avoid disclosing specific information about the project and instead, share what you learned from the experience, what skills you learned along the way, and what tools you used. If you wrote a research paper, share only a snippet of the content to provide actual proof of your authorship… all without spilling the beans!

#6 Tag your skills. Recruiters find talent in certain areas by searching for specific skills (e.g. HTML, Photoshop) on Portfolium. Make your work searchable to employers by tagging your skills in each entry. Every time you do this, each skill will automatically be listed on your profile.

#7 Put your best work first. Not every recruiter will have time to click into every entry you create, so you’ll want to be sure to customize the order of your entries and list your proudest projects first.

To arrange the order of your entries, go to the list view and simply drag and drop them as you wish.

Portfolium hack: Guide your viewers through a journey of your portfolio by linking your entries to one another. To do this, copy/paste the URL of your entry into the description of the other.

#8 Use attention-grabbing details. Although your digital portfolio will give you an edge, it’s important to put in the effort to make it stand out as much as possible. This means that first and foremost, you’ll need a clever title and an eye-catching cover image.

Portfolium hack: the unique URL of your entry is based on its title, so make sure it’s SEO friendly!

For example: https://portfolium.com/entry/high-altitude-weather-balloon-project

#9 Add a description. In addition to allowing you to visually highlight your work, digital portfolios also give you the space to provide a personal narrative of your experiences and projects. In other words, they let you tell your story.

What inspired you? What did you learn from it? What were the results? Was it a success, why or why not Demonstrate your critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

#10 Put your portfolio to good use. So many users create an awesome portfolio, but don’t realize the impact actually using it can have on their future. Put it to use by:

  • Sharing your entries via social media.
  • Bringing your Portfolium to your next interview and presenting your work on a tablet or smartphone. Don’t have a tablet? Print your portfolio instead!
  • Apply to jobs using your digital portfolio.
  • Email potential employers links to specific projects.

With that being said, simply owning a digital portfolio will help you establish a healthy online identity. Remember, your Portfolium is representation of YOU; it’s your brand, and it can be there when you’re not!

Now your portfolio is ready to help you shine! What’s your next move? (Hint: SHARE it!)
