3 of the Best Places to Work in Salt Lake City, Utah

We’ve covered a lot of ground on our quest to find the best places to work in 10 major cities around the U.S. From Denver, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Orlando, we’ve learned what makes each area a desirable place to live and work, and uncovered unique company cultures. Today we’re heading back to the southwest region to check out the capital of Utah—Salt Lake City!

Making Your Move to the “Crossroads of the West”

While there may be plenty of misconceptions floating around about Salt Lake City (Good news! You can drink coffee!), if you love the outdoors, then you’ll love being within driving distance of five national parks and multiple world-class ski resorts. Plus, a majority of the venues from the 2002 Winter Olympics are still in use. But keep in mind the city does see all four seasons and it can get quite hot in the summer. If you’re into sports, there’s plenty of collegiate and pro options to keep you entertained, as well as restaurants. And since the Salt Lake International Airport has the largest Delta Airlines hub in the West (second only in size to Atlanta) traveling to other destinations couldn’t be easier.

Top Places to Work in Salt Lake City

Thanks to an unemployment rate that’s lower than the national average, Salt Lake City has seen growth, which in turn has created economic opportunities. Companies such as Adobe Systems, 3M Health Information Systems, and Microsoft have made the city their home. In the private sector, you’ll find employment in trade, transportation, technology and utilities. There are also opportunities for jobs in education, health care, finance, manufacturing, and construction. In addition, tourism and hospitality are also growing industries. As for your payday, the average annual salary is $44,752.

Large Company – CHG Healthcare Services

Nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Therus C. Kolff developed the concept of locum tenens, or traveling physicians, as a way to deliver medical care to rural areas of the western United States. From there, the nation’s first locum tenens staffing company, CompHealth, was established. Today, the parent company CHG Healthcare Services collectively leads a family of companies as one of the largest providers of healthcare staffing in the country.

They believe in giving employees a work/life balance. That’s why in addition to traditional insurance benefits, they also offer flexible schedules, volunteer time off, tuition assistance, and an employee assistance program. While most of the positions request a ‘college-level education,’ those majoring in Health Care, Nursing, or similar will probably find success with this company.

Midsize Company – Thumbtack

Thumbtack helps connect consumers with pros they can hire to help get jobs done. This includes everything from house painting, personal training, voice lessons, and more! And they’re equally committed to making sure their employees are happy, healthy, and successful by offering an in-house culinary team, unlimited vacation time, and stipends for conferences ($5,000) and educational ($1,250) development. When it comes to what they’re looking for, most of the job descriptions simply state relevant experience to the position or a bachelor’s degree. In some cases, a graduate degree is preferred.

Small Company – Kuali

This modular, cloud-based software company partners with colleges and universities to build open source software in a competitive space so schools can spend less on administration costs and more on teaching and research. In addition to the usual benefits (i.e., health and dental), Kuali also offers its employees significant profit sharing, work from home Wednesdays, all the paid-time off they need, and technology and training allowances. While they don’t tend to list specific degree requirements since there is a lot of coding done at this company, Computer Science and other tech-like majors should do well here.
